{"id":19451,"date":"2018-11-22T20:01:49","date_gmt":"2018-11-23T04:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unwisdom.org\/chadspace\/?p=19451"},"modified":"2019-12-19T03:15:19","modified_gmt":"2019-12-19T11:15:19","slug":"word-of-the-day-entry-4-spoonerism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/unwisdom.org\/chadspace\/?p=19451","title":{"rendered":"Word of the Day, Entry 4:  Spoonerism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spoonerism\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">spoonerism<\/a><\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/unwisdom.org\/chadspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/icon-external-link-12x12.png\" alt=\"icon-external-link-12x12\" width=\"12\" height=\"12\" \/> is an error in speech in which corresponding consonants, vowels, or morphemes are switched (see <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metathesis_(linguistics)\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Metathesis<\/a> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/unwisdom.org\/chadspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/icon-external-link-12x12.png\" alt=\"icon-external-link-12x12\" width=\"12\" height=\"12\" \/>) between two words in a phrase.  These are named after the Oxford don and ordained minister <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Archibald_Spooner\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">William Archibald Spooner<\/a> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/unwisdom.org\/chadspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/icon-external-link-12x12.png\" alt=\"icon-external-link-12x12\" width=\"12\" height=\"12\" \/>, who was famous for doing this.<\/p>\n<p>An example is saying &#8220;The Lord is a shoving leopard&#8221; instead of &#8220;The Lord is a loving shepherd.&#8221; While spoonerisms are commonly heard as slips of the tongue, and getting one&#8217;s words in a tangle, they can also be used intentionally as a play on words.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr width=\"80%\" \/>\n<p>For Thanksgiving 2018, I broke bread with dear friends from Butte County, some of whom were displaced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camp_Fire_(2018)\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Camp Fire<\/a> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/unwisdom.org\/chadspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/icon-external-link-12x12.png\" alt=\"icon-external-link-12x12\" width=\"12\" height=\"12\" \/>.  After dinner, there was an idea- and cheer-induced conversation on spoonerisms, which segued into humorous ponderings such as&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Why are bees kept in apiaries and apes kept in bestiaries?<\/p>\n<p>Why do they call them apartments when they&#8217;re so close together?<\/p>\n<p>Why does cargo go by boat, and a shipment go by cars and trucks?<\/p>\n<p>Why do cars drive in parkways and park in driveways?<\/p>\n<p>How much fuller would the ocean be if they removed all the sponges?<\/p>\n<p>Why are there hysterectomies but no hyrsterectomies?<\/p>\n<p>I then found out that at least one <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gumby\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Gumby<\/a> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/unwisdom.org\/chadspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/icon-external-link-12x12.png\" alt=\"icon-external-link-12x12\" width=\"12\" height=\"12\" \/> picture&#8212;autographed by his creator, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_Clokey\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Art Clokey<\/a> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/unwisdom.org\/chadspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/icon-external-link-12x12.png\" alt=\"icon-external-link-12x12\" width=\"12\" height=\"12\" \/>&#8212;has been lost forever, amongst many other cherished personal items earned over lifetimes.<\/p>\n<p>By most measurements, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paradise,_California\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Paradise, CA<\/a> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/unwisdom.org\/chadspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/icon-external-link-12x12.png\" alt=\"icon-external-link-12x12\" width=\"12\" height=\"12\" \/> doesn&#8217;t exist anymore.
