CHEM70 — Organic Chemistry I

The dreaded and loathsome OChem.  Pre-med types apparently have nightmares about this class and suffer nervous breakdowns while taking it.  The only other people who take it are generally Chemistry majors, and apparently some of these folks aren’t particularly fans of it either. Organic Chemistry employs a Chemistry curriculum that is entirely devoid of math and built purely on the conceptual.  Is such a thing possible?  An incredibly demanding science course without math?

I loved it–couldn’t get enough.  In fact, this has been one of the best classes I have taken since returning to school.  The curriculum was also uncharacteristically strong, with each new concept being directly reinforced and explained by all of the previous concepts that were covered before it. I believe that more students would enjoy the material here if they were accustomed to conceptual thinking/problem solving instead of the the brute force approach, which apparently works in most other courses (although not for me).

Very challenging stuff, but I found it all to be very reasonable and rewarding.
